7 Dead, 11 Wounded In Gun Violence Since Wednesday, Police Say

CHICAGO — Seven people were killed — including an 11-year-old boy — and 11 more wounded in a flurry of gun violence since Wednesday, police said. 

The 11-year-old boy was accidentally shot by a family member after the boy found the gun outside and mistook it for a toy, according to Officer Janel Sedevic, a Chicago Police spokeswoman.

The boy was shot in the 7400 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue in Greater Grand Crossing around 9 p.m. Wednesday before being taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Sedevic said.

 

• The most recent fatal shooting occurred around 5:10 a.m. Thursday when a 39-year-old man was shot in his head in the 4700 block of South King Drive in Grand Boulevard, Sedevic said. A 52-year-old man was also shot, suffering wounds in his knee and shin, and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition, Sedevic said. More information on the case is not yet known.

 

• A 23-year-old man was fatally shot in his chest and torso around 11:35 p.m. Wednesday in the 700 block of North Long Avenue in Austin, Sedevic said. The man was walking when a shooter walked up and opened fire, Sedevic said. He was taken to West Suburban Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Sedevic said. The man had gang ties, police said.

 

• A 19-year-old man was killed after being shot multiple times, Sedevic said. He was outside in the 800 block of West 68th Street in Englewood around 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when someone approached and opened fire, Sedevic said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, she said.

 

• A half hour before that, a 60-year-old man was found dead with a gunshot wound in his head, Sedevic said. The man was found at 9:06 p.m. in a hallway in the 6800 block of South Merrill Avenue in South Shore, Sedevic said. The shooting could be drug-related, a police source said.

 

• A 19-year-old man was killed after being shot in his head and neck in the 5900 block of West Diversey Avenue in Belmont Cragin at 5:30 Wednesday, Sedevic said. He was taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital where he was later pronounced dead, Sedevic said. The man was with two friends when they began arguing with another man, who pulled out a gun and opened fire, Sedevic said. A 23-year-old man was shot in his back and was taken to Illinois Masonic in critical condition. A 22-year-old man was shot in his hand and was taken to Community First Medical Center in good condition, Sedevic said.

 

• At 9 a.m. Wednesday, a 25-year-old man was shot in his head and was pronounced dead after being taken to South Shore Hospital, Sedevic said. The man was standing with two other men in the 2600 block of East 74th Street in South Shore when someone opened fire, Sedevic said. A 29-year-old man was shot in his chest and back and taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition. A 50-year-old man was grazed in the back and was taken to Jackson Park Hospital, and was expected to be released, Sedevic said.

 

• The most recent non-fatal shooting happened at 2:50 a.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of West 115th Street in West Pullman when a 27-year-old woman was shot in her torso, Sedevic said. The woman was outside when someone opened fire, and she was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in critical condition, Sedevic said.

 

• At 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the 4000 block of South Oakenwald Avenue in Oakland, a 20-year-old man was shot in his back, Sedevic said. The man was shot at from a passing vehicle and was taken to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition, Sedevic said.

 

• A 20-year-old man was shot in his face and a 26-year-old man was shot in his leg at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 10500 block of South LaSalle Street in Roseland, Sedevic said. Both were standing outside when a shooter approached on foot, Sedevic said. Both were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition, she said.

 

• An 18-year-old man was shot in his foot in the 300 block of North Latrobe Avenue in Austin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sedevic said. He was taken to Loretto Hospital in good condition, she said.

 

• A 41-year-old man was shot in his left side at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the 6900 block of South Ashland Avenue in West Englewood, Sedevic said. The man was hit after shots rang out from a black sedan, Sedevic said. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in stable condition.
