Berwyn, Illinois.– City Barbeque, an award-winning barbeque joint built on a foundation of “low and slow” smoked meats, made-from-scratch sides, indulgent desserts, and a healthy dose of backyard hospitality, recently opened its first location in the Chicagoland at 7108 W Cermak Rd. A ribbon cutting was held in conjunction with the City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) on October 30.
On Saturday, November 4, the restaurant held a community opening celebration, featuring live music, family entertainment and a Big Green Egg giveaway. Guests were able to sample City Barbeque’s pulled pork, brisket, smoked turkey, St Louis–cut ribs, sausage and smoked Amish farm chickens, as well as homemade specialties like warm peach cobbler, hand-dipped hush puppies and award-winning banana pudding (recently named one of the top 10 in America by Paula Deen Magazine). In keeping with the restaurant’s commitment to community involvement, 10% of sales on November 4 went to Berwyn’s own J. Sterling Morton High School and its Fine Arts Program. City Barbeque also sold T-shirts for a suggested donation of $5, with 100% of the sales going to the school.
City Barbeque is the newest opening in Berwyn Gateway Plaza Phase II. The project is a complete renovation of the commercial block on the north side of Cermak Road between Maple Ave and Wisconsin Ave. Starbucks was the first store to open in late 2015. In 2016, Blaze Fast-Fire’d Pizza, Fifth Third Bank and Sprint Connect, LLC opened in the shopping center. The project welcomed Mattress Firm in mid-October and will welcome another retailer in the near future. With the success of both Phase I and Phase II, a third phase of development is already underway with commitments from Panera Bread and Comcast Xfinity, along an additional 2,418 sf of space which is being actively marketed for lease.
“Thank you for choosing Berwyn as your first Chicagoland location. We’re excited to have City Barbeque here at Berwyn Gateway Plaza Cermak—welcome!” said BDC Vice President Anthony Belcaster.
“City Barbeque is already playing an active and supportive role in the community. We really appreciate all that you are doing for Berwyn, welcome to your new home in Berwyn,” said Mayor Robert J. Lovero.
